Abstract:

Humans have altered the nitrogen cycle dramatically over the last half-century, and as a result, nitrate is steadily accumulating in our limited water resources especially in groundwater. Nitrate can occur naturally in surface and groundwater at a level that does not generally cause any health problems in humans. However excessive levels of nitrate in drinking water can cause serious illness and sometimes death. High concentration of nitrate in groundwater in Iran is mainly due to improper sanitary systems, overuse of chemical fertilizers and industrial waste mainly food processing waste. The main aim of this study is to review the recent research on nitrate pollution in groundwater of Iran’s cities, which are using this water source as drinking water. In addition, three different management strategies are suggested in order to control the negative effect of nitrate pollution.
