Abstract:

The Ground water is an important component of our nation’s fresh water resources. In many parts of the nation, ground water serves as the only reliable source of drinking and irrigation water. Unfortunately, this vital resource is vulnerable to contamination, and ground water contaminant problems are being reported throughout the country. Ground water quality can be adversely affected or degraded as a result of human activities that introduce contaminants into the environment. Ground water quality may be adversely impacted by a variety of potential contaminant sources. Industrial and some commercial developments present the greatest risk. Groundwater contamination can result from deliberate waste disposal, and accidental leaks or spills of hazardous chemicals during transport, storage or use. To study the effects of Isfahan Steel Mill Industry wastewater lagoons on the quality of water wells around them, wastewater samples from 5 lagoons and water samples from 7 wells were collected for the periods of 6 months in the year 2004. All the samples kept on ice and transferred to the laboratory for analysis. The chemical parameters pH, EC, TDS, TOC, COD, CN & C6H5OH were determined. The EXCEL software were used to plot the curves, statistical methods ANOVA and DUNCAN were used to analysis the data. The results of the study showed that the average concentration of the parameters varies in the area of study ; COD from 27 to 72 mg/l, CL from 320 to 961 mg/l, TDS from 2424 to 3809 mg/l, TOC form 3.5 to 10.3 mg/l, cyanide from 0.002 to 0.01 mg/l and phenol from 0.002 to 0.007 mg/l. Except of phenol and cyanide even the minimum concentration of the mention parameters exceeded drinking water standard levels. The results also showed that wells NO. 3 and 4 are highly polluted. While these two wells also are located in the lower area of the lagoons, comparing with the high quality of the wells A and B , and regarding the directions of the surface slop from lagoons toward the polluted wells. It seems that the lagoons polluted the water wells. So monitoring of the ground water and prevention of aquifer pollution is necessary.
