Abstract:

MTBE is a gasoline additive which used to enhance the gasoline octane number. In Iran, MTBE has become a conventional gasoline additive instead of lead in recent years. In this research the experiment with completely randomized design was conducted on 90 mice in 6 groups with three replications to find out the effects of MTBE on white female mouse reproduction and sexual hormone conditions. The daily intake (reception) dose of MTBE was 10 mg/kg (body weight) to 2000 mg/kg (body weight) in four treatments while two other treatments, control negative group and control positive group, received Canola oil and cadmium chloride, respectively. Blood sample were obtained in different days, then their Estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4), liver enzymes, cholesterol and bilirubin were measured . Furthermore, the effects of MTBE on pregnant mice and their babies were investigated. Statistical analysis showed that MTBE has a significant effect on the estrogen and liver enzymes concentration in mice. The histological survey didn't approve the carcinogenic variations of ovary. However MTBE reduced the weight of ovary, fetus, and parent, significantly. MTBE didn't affect the pregnancy duration and litter size. Regarding to these results it is expected that MTBE has adverse effects on female animal reproduction.
