Abstract:

Mathematical process models as a decision support method for process selection, design and operation, and as a powerful process optimization tool, have been developed in the field of biological treatment of wastewater. The IAWQ ASM No.1 offered a new trend in activated sludge modelling in 1987. In addition, ASM2, ASM3 and ASM 3D have presented by the IWA Task Group on Mathematical Modeling for the Design and Operation of Biological Wastewater Treatment. These models have not been used in design of wastewater treatment plants in Iran yet. The purpose of presenting this paper is to explain the ASM No. 1 for experts that are design and operate the wastewater treatment plants in Iran. In ASM no. 1, there are thirteen variables ( including carbounous and nitrogenous compounds) and thirteen equations (net growth , death and hydrolysis of substrates with thirteen variables), which are simply described in this paper .
