Abstract:

PHAS is known to be temporarily stored by microorganisms in activated sludge, especially in the anaerobic-aerobic processes. The aim of this study was the possibility of using activated sludge for the production of PHAs focusing on increasing the PHA content of activated sludge. In this research the effect of SRT and HRT of aerobic zone in influent were studied. It was found that activated sludge with an SRT of 15 days and HRT of 6.7 hr possessed better PHAs production capability. In order to further increase the PHAS content of activated sludge the effect of C/N in PHAS Production reactor was also studied. As a result, it was found that PHAs contents of MLSS were achieved up to maximum by using C: N ratio of 25. It was also concluded that wastewater including nitrogenous compounds might also be applicable as carbon source for PHAs production.
