Abstract:

Health care wastes, because of their dangerous nature have always considered by the health authorities and Department of Environment (DOE). Their improper management encountered the patients, personnel of health centers, workers who collect these wastes and the public with the illnesses such as hepatitis B, C and AIDS. To achieve a proper management model in Tehran metropolitan area, extensive studies accomplished in the field of existing regulations and standards for the management of the health care wastes in the world metropolitan areas . Then, the present status of health care wastes management of Tehran was studied. The results of these studies show that in the most of health care centers of Tehran, dangerous and non-risk wastes (domestic type wastes) are collected separately but these wastes are not collected by the regional municipalities separately; therefore the health care centers don't make any attempt to improve their management activities. Using the results of the performed studies and referring to management patterns in other countries, these findings are achieved: Firstly, the optimum management of the health care wastes requires the productive interaction between the municipalities as the agent of collecting and discarding, and in the other hand, the health care centers as the producer of these wastes. Secondly, with the proper performance of the separation activities, 60 percent of these wastes are non-risk and can be passed off as the city wastes and for the remaining 40 percent, the use of incinerators of second generation (double-chamber) that their exhausting gases are without pollutant is recommended. This recommendation is advised in the form of one rotary kiln in the case of a central incinerator unit that has a great capacity to destroy the wastes. This type of incinerator is suitable for burning the dangerous industrial wastes and the cooperation of the private sector on this system is profitable.
