Abstract:

Many advantages for using PAC (poly aluminum chloride) as coagulant in conventional water treatment process in comparison to alum and ferric chloride in medium and high turbidity are pointed out which included: less required amount of PACL specially in removing of turbidity, of floc sedimentation time decrement, no need to pH adjustment with lime, lower sludge production and other parameters. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of different coagulants such as ferric chloride and PACL in direct filtration method and then to determine the most effective based the removal of turbidity and the removal of particles. In order to carry out an experimentally investigation, a specially laboratory Pilot system, including raw water preparation coagulation, flocculation, distribution measurement and filtration, units was designed and built (used). Turbidity of raw water, in the experimental pilot was below 10 ntu. In this research work, effect of various parameters such as type of coagulant, filtration rate and coagulant dosage on performance of the filter was investigated. The result of 8 filtration period in various condition indicated average effluent turbidity and average particle effluent in filtration period with use of PACL as a coagulant is less than Ferric chloride and filtration operation period is high. Average turbidity increases with filtration rate increment. In this research, effect of coagulant type and dosage investigated on turbidity and effluent particle removal. Adding 2 mg PACL per liter, 5 mg ferric chloride per liter and 5 mg PACL per liter compared with similar condition. The results indicated that average effluent turbidity is longest and removal of turbidity and particles are poorest.
