Abstract:

Spirulina is one of the micro algae species which produced commercially. The general aim of this work is to produce Spirulina with cheap and natural methods by using different soils and to achieve high productivity. Spirulina were grown in Zarrouk culture medium, which is traditionally used by the industrial producers. In addition to the classical growth conditions, different soils from North Africa, Iran and Ankara were used as additional nutrient providers to the reactors, under continuous light source. Reactors were aerated and mixed with air pumps at 28-38 0C and pH range was 8-11 during the experiments. Highest growth was observed in 60% Sahara and 40% Zarrouk fed reactors. Similar growth was achieved by 60% Zabol and 40% Zarrouk samples after pure Zarrouk solution. Enhancements obtained by using Ankara soil sample was at minimal. Besides, it has been determined that spirulina were grown in Saharan dust solution by addition of some nutrients. As a result, addition of Saharan dust solution to conventional Zarrouk solution increased production rate. The results revealed that production cost of spirulina can be reduced significantly by using alternative natural growth media
