An investigation on the seismic behavior of schools in district 3 of Tehran

Abstract:

The schools normally could play an important role in earthquake risk management. These buildings not only could be considered as very important structures (based on the Iranian Building Code 2800) but also could be used as emergency evacuation places after the earthquake. In this paper at first the geological, seismic condition, fault rupture and amplification potential of district number 3 of Tehran have been presented and then the vulnerability and distribution of the schools structures in this district would be evaluated. Then these situations have been compared with the situation of schools at Ghaen City that experienced a strong earthquake in 1998. This comparison shows the high level of vulnerability of the schools buildings in this district and shows the necessity for reconstruction and retrofitting of vulnerable structures. At the end of this paper some basic recommendation would be presented to improve the current situation.
