Abstract:

Drought is defined as the continuous and abnormal moisture deficit. The term of continues means continuation of deficit and the term abnormal means deviation of favorite index of natural condition from the mean. In every drought study four main characteristics are considered: Severity, Duration, Frequency or Return period and Areal Extent. The objective of this study was to analyze these characteristics of droughts and to use them in plotting drought maps over Golestan province. To study drought and mapping, deferent indexes have been invented, one of these index is the the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) that is.It is practical and simple method.The base of this index is precipitation. To stydy the drought ,inside and outside the Golestan province were used. Records from13 stations within the same period of 20 years (1360-1380) in scale of annual. The result of analysis, was showed that the least SPI and drought Magnitude has happened in Taghiabad station, in the west golestan province , within years (1364-1365). .the highest observed SPI was observed humid magnitude has happened in Galikesh station, in the west golestan province, within years (1376-1377). the severest duration drought has happened within years (1379-1380),and almost the whole province was drought .drought condition from 1364 was systematic and drought has repeated three evry .this prediction is used in Golestan province to manage the drought
