Abstract:

Seismic vulnerability evaluation of transmission substations is of great importance, as many economical, social, and even political activities are associated with the appropriate performance of electric power network. Therefore, increasing the safety level of the electric power network is inevitable. Past earthquake experiences such as recent earthquakes in Bam and Zarand have indicated that most of damages in transmission and distribution substations have been due to lack of proper design detailing, and inappropriate construction and installation of structures and facilities. Accordingly, with the aid of seismic walk down and fast evaluation of initial design, construction and installation, it is possible to avoid direct heavy loss on substations, and also to prevent indirect loss and disturbance caused by improper performance of a substation on rescue and relief activities as well as disaster management. Having considered the significance of this issue, in this paper, seismic vulnerability evaluation of Bistoon Substation, an important transmission substation in Iran, has been discussed and weak points have been shown. In this substation, existing power transformers and reactors have been shown to be potentially vulnerable, as they are improperly installed on the foundations. Major deficiencies have been observed in structural design of control building. Also, the results gained by seismic vulnerability evaluation of structures and facilities as well as the existing major deficiencies have been discussed.
