Investigation on Natural Disasters Management in Iranian Railway Network

Abstract:

As in transportation network development process, road & railway cross through different atmospheres and geographic circumstances, and as, depends on area to be mountainous and/or plain, dry and hot, mild and cold and wet weather, and may go under different Natural Disasters including earthquake, land slide, slope instability, atmospheric & hydrological and desert emission risks. That is why it is necessary, the above said Natural Disasters should be find out completely in design, construction and maintenance of the networks in mentioned areas and substantial solutions to be provided in order to reduce damages resulted from such Disasters to be occurrence. This paper, particularly, deals with rail transportation network damage sustainability due to mentioned Disasters, and while describing effects of them in decreasing transportation safety, the experienced solutions in other countries expressed. Due to our countries vastness, and considering that rail network crosses through Alborz and Zagros mountainous area as well as desert, Iranian Railway network is dealed and described as a case study. Studies show that before train speed increase, it is necessary to establish Natural Disasters management system in Railway; the way that running train speeds restricted automatically and online in given area or stopped in determined conditions. Some of disasters such as weather conditions require that speed restrictions to be exercised for trains, and some others such as land slide, mountain slope instability along railway require that train should stop automatically and without man power interference. In this paper, I tried to describe natural Disasters management system in railways and substantial solutions are expressed to fulfill it.
