Abstract:

Many factors govern the size and the shape of an open pit. This must be properly understood and used in the planning of any mining operation. At 3rd open pit mine of Gol-e-Gohar, rock mass structural properties are known as the most important point for pit slope design. The analysis of the geological structures is the point of starting for pit planning. The wall orientation or the curvature in plan of the pit walls taking in to account the variability of the walls materials, economical and the operational conditions should be considered as the second criterion. Different pit wall orientations require basically different design consideration. For analysis purposes, the 15 year pit of 3rd mine of Gol-e-Gohar, is divided into several design sectors. Geotechnical surveying in the anomaly No. 3 of Gol-e-Gohar was undertaken base on the drilling data to determine the critical orientation of structural discontinuities. Within each sector, the stability of kinimatically possible wedge, plane and toppling failure involving was assessed. In order to obtain stable sectors all around the pit the orientation of unstable sectors should be changed on the basis of the neighboring stable sectors.
