Abstract:

Nowadays Evolutionary Programming methods such as Genetic Algorithms are used to solve complex problems successfully. Production scheduling in open pit mining is a complicated task which is difficult to solve it with classic optimization techniques. In open pit mining, the optimum pit outline is first determined and then the scheduling is carried out. The aim of production scheduling is to determine the sequence of mining blocks in order to maximize net present value (NPV). The existing methods for solving this problem have some disadvantages, therefore using other techniques is necessary. Since genetic algorithms have been used to solve complex problems successfully, therefore it is used to solve production scheduling problem. This paper describes the use of genetic algorithm for the production scheduling in open pit mining. An example is also used to evaluate the model and the results.
