Abstract:

Alteration and weathering as natural processes which reduce the stability and strength of rocks need special consideration in engineering studies of rocks. Evaluation of alteration and weathering in different conditions and their effects on engineering properties of rocks need special studies. Factors such as type of host rock and physicochemical characteristics of hydrothermal solutions affect the alteration of rocks while the aptitude of rocks against the weathering depends on factors such as mineralogical composition, grain size, texture, structure and environmental conditions. A better prediction of engineering properties of rocks will be achieved by determination and recognition of degree of rock alteration and study of rocks in this form. In this study in order to study the effects of alteration and weathering on geomechanical parameters of rocks at Sarcheshmeh copper mine (Andesite, Granodiorite, Sarcheshmeh Porphyry and late fine porphyry rock types with Potassic, Phylic, Argillic, Propilitic & Biotitic Alterations), by doing uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), indirect Brazilian tensile strength, point load , Schmidt hammer and rapid water absorption tests on different rock samples a lot of quantitative data have been collected and physical and mechanical properties of rocks studied. According to the results of these studies, by increasing the degree of alteration many of geomechanical properties of rocks will be decreased.
