Abstract:

Most of slope design methods are aimed at predicting when loads applied to the slope exceeds the slope strength. The methods are based on calculating the sum of loads acting on the slope and comparing it with the strength of slope along a presumed failure surface. Commonly used design methods can be categorized as empirical methods and limit equilibrium methods. Empirical methods are based on the knowledge from the slope behavior history and all slope parameters are included in an empirically determined diagram. Equilibrium methods lack accuracy for detail design and should only be used for preliminary design. The limit equilibrium methods are based on closed from solutions obtained from equilibrium equations. These methods can be used when the problem geometry is simple, material behavior and loading condition are not complex. Hence, application of these methods has limitation for detail design in particular for complicated slopes. On the other hand, numerical methods are advanced design techniques which are introduced to the mining industry during the past decades. The objective of this paper is to discuss the important mechanisms involved in slope failure and demonstrated the application of advanced 3D numerical techniques to the slope stability problems.
