Development of Windows Software (PitBlast) For Drilling and Blasting Pattern in Open Pit Mining

Abstract:

In open pit mining, drilling and blasting are the most common methods to extract ore and remove overburden or waste. The main aim of this operation is to accomplish an efficient blasting with minimum undesirable effects by means of the lowest amount of the related costs. Therefore designing an optimum drilling and blasting pattern is the essential step in mining operation to attain an appropriate fragmentation. This paper attempts to introduce a Windows software called PitBlast to determine drilling and blasting patterns using different methods. The software, which has been developed by the use of Borland C++ Builder, is executable under windows operating system and has four major components: 1. The component for the calculation of drilling and blasting pattern. 2. The component for the determination of controlled blasting in open pit mining. 3. The component for the calculation of fragmentation. 4. The component for the estimation of drilling and blasting costs. The software can be used by the mining operators to design appropriate patterns for determining of an optimum blasting operation in open pit mining.
