Abstract:

There are 612000 ha of operating farms of the irrigation and drainage networks in Khuzestan province. Due to special conditions of topology, geomorphology and river situation, water diversion using pumping method has an important role in water supplying these farms. Because of being flooding some of its rivers and existences of high sediment density in them as well as inappropriate (incompatible) design of some of pump stations, sedimentation in the rivers also blockage and accumulation of sediment through the entrance of some intakes (or all of them), the hydro structures and pump stations have encountered many serious problems including reduction of discharge and water divert capacity, erosion of impellers, disorder in pumping, intensive cavitations and in general, reducing efficiency and energy consumption. On the other hand, due to economic importance of the irrigation and drainage networks in this district, it necessitates supplying the required water for this network, and this involves achieving proper performance of the pump stations. So the purpose of this paper is studying the causes of sedimentation in any type of pump stations and offering appropriate course of actions to overcome these problems. To meet this objective, a number of 20 main pump stations (which their capacities were higher than 1 m 3 /s) were selected and evaluated. In this regard, we considered stations which in procedure of water diversion, kind of river, the amount of sediment load and procedure of overcoming to sedimentation process vary. This evaluation revealed that the causes of sedimentation are generally resulted in selecting inappropriate location of stations, the long distance between river bank and the near station and inappropriate design the structures and so on, which are suggested in this paper.
