Abstract:

One of the most important reasons for bridges destruction is local scour around their piers, especially in the flood period. Therefore determination of local scour depth around pier of bridge plays an important role in design of bridge. This is done by practical equations. These equations have been obtained by different researchers using experimental and field data with the regression analysis. Of courses to determine the value of scour depth, It is necessary to use the equation, which has a less essential error. In this paper, using field data and regression analysis a new equation for estimation of scour depth around a bridge pier is obtained. Then, using field data a comparison between this new equation and three commonly bridge pier scour equations (Johnson' equ. , Jonse' equ. ,and simplified Chinese equation) is made. The field data for comparison were obtained from 8 bridge sites in the USA. Comparison between the predicted and measured depth of scour from field data showed that the simplified Chinese and new equations appeared to give a reasonable estimate.
