Abstract:

The aim of this study is to investigate the threshold condition for sediment motion in open channel flows. Based on data available from previous studies, a comparison of different methods for predicting the incipient motion conditions of a uniform sand bed is presented. The effect of the ratio of critical flow velocity to the approach flow velocity for predicting local scour depth around bridge piers is investigated. Based on this comparison, in this article we propose an empirical method for predicting the critical velocity for sediment movement.
