Abstract:

The streamlines of the flow at straight open channel are approximately parallel to the flow direction. When an intake with 90 degree deflection is installed at one side of the canal, the streamlines of the flow deflect toward the intake. This phenomenon makes a complicated and three dimensional flow structures. At this flow condition, two groups of secondary currents may produce at the region close to the water intake. The first group of secondary currents rotates in horizontal surface, however the second group rotates in vertical direction. In this study, the first group of secondary currents is referred to plain secondary currents. Statistical analysis of the experimental result showed that there is a relation between strength of secondary currents and mean flow velocity in the diversion canal. Two series of vanes were installed in parallel and zigzag arrangement at the region close to water intake. The strength of secondary currents were measured and compared for two arrangements. It was found that in both arrangements, 20 installation angle produced less strength in secondary currents.
