Assessing Flushing Effects on the Increase of the Reservoir Life (Shahid Abbaspour Dam Flushing Case Study)

Abstract:

Of the main problems that sediments entered the reservoir may cause are reservoir life decrease and severe damages to the power plant installations. Therefore various options are suggested to decrease sediments deposited in the reservoir. The most important and cost effective option is flushing operation. In the present article for the first time the effects of sediment flushing on the decrease of sediments at the shahid abbaspour dam body and increase of dam's life were assessed. The results of the implemented hydrographs before and after flushing of the dam were studied and then the volume of the flushing sediments, its effects against the time, the percentage of flushed sediments to total sediments of the under flushing area and total sediments of the reservoir were assessed. At the end with the assumption that operation instructions are not updated, low level flushing tunnel of the dam used for annual manoeuvers is not reconstructed, and the fact that vegetative cover of the watershed has not changed, the remaining life of the dam predicted and optimum flushing instructions provided.
