Abstract:

Effects of using surface flow tracing algorithms on decision making for management of flood control projects are studied. In this paper different methods of flow tracing in GIS environment and the algorithm which is used in ARCVIEW-GIS are described. It is shown that for a case study, how the conventional method of projects evaluation based basically on field observation, leads to mistake and can cause wasting of capitalization in river engineering part of project. The mentioned algorithm shows that how one can find the probable routs of flood wave. Such an approach will lead to different solutions for flood control. Case Study results reveal that using a hydrologic mathematical model linked to flow tracing methods embedded in GIS, can show approximate locations of outlets and give an acceptable estimate of design flood magnitude in each node and in each scenario. The difference in final results, before and after application of the new methodology is noticeable.
