Abstract:

This paper considers and compares two different method of flood control; construction of feasible detention ponds in urban basins, the basin immediately upstream an urban area, and conventional localized river engineering countermeasures For the chosen case study, upon determination of design flood the effects of flood magnitude on conveyance canal dimensions, with and without detention ponds, are compared. Total costs of both flood control alternatives are estimated and compared. Results show that incorporation of detention ponds in urban basins for flood control purposes is superior to conventional localized river engineering and flood control countermeasures regarding socio-economic issues.
