Abstract:

The Tembi river is one of the rivers which flows near the city of Masjid – i - Soleiman . This river is located East of the Greenwich Meridian at longitudes 48 0 33 / and 49 0 53 / and North of the Equator at latitudes 31 0 42 / and 32 0 37 / in the East of the Khuzistan province . Since the river flows along the Southwestern boundaries of the city , the raw municipal discharge , The waste water from the traditional cattle slanghter – house in the region , and the raw sewage of the villages which are located in the vicinity of the city are discharge into it . The study is aimed at the examining of the quantity and quality of the municipal sewage dischrge of the city of Masjid –i– Solieman and its effects upon the total water quality of the river itself . Various sampling points along the Tembi river , the various and waterways by which sewage was directed into the river were identified and samples collected over the period of October 2003 until July 2004 on a monthly basis . The flow rate of the river was also measured at specific stations . The statistical The samples were then analyzed accordind to standards . analysis show that inflow of waste water into the Tembi river decreases the amount of Na , Ca , TDS and EC with a confidence interval of 95% , whereas other parameters such as Phosphate , BOD and Bicarbonate increase significantly . The study alsi shows that the ravines in the city act as natural drainage systems and collect and transfer municipal waste water and surface waters outside the city limits . During the transfering of the waste water through these ravines , the suspended solids in it begin to settle , thus insuring a mechanical purification of the waste water . In tandem a biological purification of the waste water takes place through the process of aeriation . On the other hand the significant increase of BOD and Phosphates in the Tembi river show that natural purification does not occur perfectly for the inflowing waste water , thus some organic material and phosphate enter the river .
