Abstract:

In this paper, the spreading of three-dimensional, turbulent particle laden density currents has been investigated and compared the steady and unsteady flows. The experimental results were normalized in the form of non-dimensional plots and then a theoretical model was developed. The current width, b, and the relative situation of the tip of the nose of turbidity current, x, are normalized with the buoyancy length scale ؟؟؟. Results of the steady flow show that in the non-dimensional current width curve versus non-dimensional distance, two regions R1 ( b /3 l o ) are distinguished. This indicates that in these two regions, the amount and type of the balanced forces are different. In region R1, the rate of lateral growth is less than region R2, while the current width in R1 and R2 regions, respectively are proportional to x 0 .25 and x 1.2 .
