Abstract:

Awareness of floodplain is important in river safety and management. Because of prevention of flood risk and determination of the best locations for construction of hydraulic structures near the river, specifying the floodplains for large rivers such as karun with different return periods is very essential. The main purpose of this study is consideration and evaluation of the performance of Hec-Ras and Hec-Georas in determination of floodplain, with due attention to geographic and hydrometric available information between Mollasani-Ahwaz reach of Karun. In the first step, thorough geographic information and software of Arcview, the TIN layout was made and, the necessary information such as cross sections and river path was then determined and extracted using the extension Hec-Georas. After this step, hydraulic analysis such as calibration of Manning coefficient was carried out by applying Hec-Ras software. Finally the outputs of computation entered to Arcview software and floodplains for floods with different return periods were created.
