Abstract:

Kan River is located in the north-west of Great Tehran. After exiting central-south Alborz Mountains, with relatively steep slope, shallow depth and relatively wide bed, Kan River indicates the properties of a braided river. Here, it has a high capacity of sediment transport and tends to decrease its excess energy through widening. When entering the plain area, by a sudden reduction in the longitudinal slope, the river starts deposition and widening. In this region, bank materials are unstable and erodible with low-cohesion grains. At the downstream reach of Tehran-Tabriz Railway Bridge, sand and gravel mining from the river bed-material has changed the river morphology. The volume of sand and gravel, taken from the river bed, is more than the sediment supply by the flow. This has caused bed deepening, bank erosion and bed-material distortion and has destroyed the plant covering of the river. In this paper the morphological changes of Kan River due to gravel mining at the downstream reach of Tehran-Tabriz Railway Bridge are studied.
