Abstract:

Groynes are hydraulic structures to divert and protect the side wall of riveres and shorelines by stilling the flow. In this investigation, four types of groynes are studied: 1. Impermeable perpendicular groyne, 2. angular impermeable groyne, 3. permeable circular cross section pile groyne, and 4. rectangular cross section pier which is installed in an angle respect to the flow direction. The groyne types are installed in a concrete canal covered by sand in bed. The dimension of the canal is 21 m in length, 0.77 m wide and 0.6 m in depth. The length of each groyne field is 60 cm. the flow velocity is measured by “Miniature Propeller Current Meter” in various points of each groyne field. The measured data are simulated and evaluated by FLUENT software. Finally, a comparison of all four groynes in their performances is presented.
