Abstract:

In most sediment studies, settling columns are used in order to determine the sediment physical parameters in stagnant water. Of these parameters one is sediment fall velocity. Extensive studies have been conducted in the past regarding this parameter for non-cohsive sediments while a few scholars as McLaughlin (1959), Krone (1963) and Krishnappan (2000) have dealt with this parameter in cohesive sediments. In the present study to calculate the fall velocity in cohesive sediments, a 3m high settling column of water and sediment mixture was formed and representative samples were taken at different depths and using existing equations and relative diagrams fall velocity in cohesive sediments was determined. The results showed that flocculation occurs at the depths of 60 to 90 cm.
