Abstract:

The momentum and continuity equations together are called Saint Venant. Considering all of the terms in momentum equation for flood routing calculation, the wave is named as dynamic and ignoring all of the terms except friction and bed slope, the wave is called as kinematic. It is obvious that solving of kinematic wave is too simple, cheap and fast as compared with dynamic wave however it may lead to some simplification errors. So in this research we are going to investigate and compare dynamic and kinematic waves and introduce a criteria regarding to some geometry specification of river as bed slope in order to using kinematic wave instead of dynamic in river engineering studies. These criteria will be developed to reduce simplification errors of momentum equation as much as possible in kinematic wave. The Dez River is analyzed and investigated considering these criteria as a case study.
