Assessment of spatial and temporal variation of karun river water quality in Ahvaz - Gotvand limit

Abstract:

The Karun river with remarkable discharge is one of the significant water resources of in country. Excessive consumption of this resource for various purposes including drinking, agriculture and industry with in the Gutvand-Ahvaz limit is the reason that the evaluation of spatial and temporal variation was considered to be too much important. For this purpose, physico-chemical data within the whole statistical period for Gotavand, Dasht e Bozorg, Shushtar, Darkhezineh, Arab asad, Bamdej, Molasani and Ahvaz stations were collected, organized and assessed. With the use of appropriate statistical and chemical graphs spatial and temporal variation of Karun, Shetate and Gargar Rivers water with respect to electrical conductivity within the statistical period (1993-2004) were analyzed and interpreted. The quality of water for drinking and agriculture were also evaluated within the same period. The collected data is indicating that various factors such as surface and groundwater from the left bank of Karun river which is under influence of geological formations such as Gachsaran, Mishan and Aghajari, excessive irrigation water and high groundwater level in the lower reaches are responsible for river water degradation in the course of time.
