Abstract:

Water surface elevation in confluences can affect the stage discharge relationship upstream the river. Backwaters make the stage discharge relationship of Tributary River a complex relation that depends not only on tributary river discharge but also in main channel discharge. Gargar, Shoteit and Dez rivers combine in Bandehghir and form the great Karoon River. Water surface in Shoteit-Dez-Gargar confluence is so that the Gargar river discharge reduces substantially during floods. The backwater phenomenon in Gargar River had not been studied yet. In this study we showed that during the floods and high flows in the Shoteit-Dez- Gargar system water surface slopes in Gargar river decrease with increase in the confluence discharge. After passing the minimum discharge point, Gargar discharge start to increase to its highest flow while the water surface elevation in confluence is nearly constant. Then with gradual decrease in confluence flow, Gargar velocity and discharge increases. Stage discharge relationship in Gargar during the flood and high flow in Shoteit-Dez-Gargar system is a complex two wing loops. Comparing the results of this study with conventional method used in Gargar river daily stream flow computations showed that the historical discharge computations and the conventional methods bear a great component of error.
