Abstract:

Erosion generally occurs in river beds and river banks in forms of mass or gradual erosion, and it changes river course, river form, or river flood capacity. Revetments are more applicable than other protective methods which can maintain rivers directly. Using rocks and stones as revetments are usual methods to protect river beds and banks against erosion. The most important criteria for designing a riprap revetment are determination of size of stones. Researchers proposed some methods to calculate Stone size, and among them Escarameia, Maynord, and pilarczyk suggested famous techniques to estimate stone size in a riprap revetment. In this paper, the above methods will be considered, and then a case study will be depicted which is related to the GhareAghaj River in Fars Province. In this example the 3 above methods will be compared. To do this, after selection of a proper return period, the river hydraulic model, Hec-Ras, will be run and average river velocity will be calculated. After estimation of river flow velocity in river eroded borders, the stone size for a riprap revetment will be calculated according to 3 methods.
