Abstract:

Studying the head velocity of density currents in reservoirs and seawaters it of outmost importance. One parameter affecting head velocity of density currents is the river section variations in dam reservoirs. The present study investigates the effects of density current discharge , bed slope variations and divergance angle on the head velocities of a density current were examined by a physical model. Experiments were performed in a 6m long flume with a height of 60 cm and a width of .725 m using various discharges and slopes and at 3 different divergence angles i.e.,8, 12.5 and 26 degress. Then nin-dimentianal flow front velocities were determined. The measurements also showed that the current density head head velocity for a discharge at a dinergent section was higher than that of a fixed section and as slope increases the sthe head velocity rise. Measuremnts also indicated that the head velocity variations corresponding to the divergence angle variations range from 8 to 26, which is low fact.
