Abstract:

Catastrophe theory was created by Rene Thom (1969), a French mathematician. With this theory, it is possible to apply the temporal and local changes of the dynamic system on the geometrical figures called the catastrophe models. This theory describes the reciprocal relation between the system variables in a geometrical model. According to the researches done by the authors of this paper, the catastrophe theory has been applied in many fields, such as engineering, basic sciences, medicine, human sciences, etc. In this paper, first the principles of the catastrophe theory is described in simple words and then the cusp-catastrophe which is mainly used in engineering studies is presented. At the end, the threshold motion of the sediment and the sediments transport rate done in flow hydraulic laboratory in high speeds in China (2002) are examined.
