Desilting of Reservoirs by Flushing

Abstract:

Sedimentation in reservoirs and thus reduction in dam's useful lifetime has been considered as an important cause of investment & time loosing for many years. Analysis of data gathered from approximately 2300 dams in 31 countries shows that by the year 2000 about 567 km3 (10% of the current gross available storage in the world )has been lost to sedimentation .Nowadays, different techniques like ,soil conservation ,upstream small dams (debris) construction ,dredging ,flushing,… are used for desilting of reservoirs or reservoir's sediment reduction. The importance of keeping reservoir's useful capacity, worldwide, and too many improvements in increasing of beneficial reservoir's capacity, achived by the method of flushing, prove the necessity of investigation in flushing feasibility in the first steps of design of those dams which their basin has considerable sedimentation. Flushing is one of the most important and the cheapest methods of reservoir's volume recovery. Consequently in this article besides hydraulic characteristic's investigation of flushing method, by using of reservoir conservation program (RESCON), it is considered the analysis of experimental criteria of the method success.
