Abstract:

Hydrologists have been trying to derive the rainfall – runoff relationship over a catchment area. The most important issue is the resulting river dischargers needed by the engineers for design purposes. Hydrograph analysis is therefore, a main theme in the water (flood) management. A hydrograph which describe the whole time history of the changing rate of flow and flood conditions that may happen in the future. A major step forward in hydrological analysis was the concept of the Unit Hydrograph introduced by Sherman in 1932. A Unit Hydrograph is a hydrograph in which the runoff’s height is equal to a unit. One advantage is that when we have a hydrograph foe a given catchment area, it can be used for engineering (hydraulic) design applications. A unit hydrograph can either be obtained from existing measured hydrographs or a synthetic hydrograph can be derived. In this study, due to lack of data , a synthetic unit hydrograph for Sirvan river Catchment was determined to predict peak flood flows in the whole area. Two methods were usedto obtain synthetic unit hydrographs Sirvan Catchment Area. Schnider method and SCS method . in comparison, the Schnider method analysis predicts greater number of maximum (peak) discharges to occur than results obtained from the SCS method. On the other hand, the results from Schnider method have shown more consistency with empirical unit hydrograph . therefore, it can be concluced that it’s better to use Schnider method for important water development projects.
