Design of State Feedback Damping Controller for STATCOM Using Genetic Algorithm

In this paper, a novel method for the design of state feedback damping controller for static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) using Genetic Algorithm (GA) is developed. The design problem of state feedback damping controller is formulated as an optimization problem according with the eigenvalue based objective function which is solved by a GA that emulates biological evolutionary theories to solve complex optimization problems by using directed random searches to derive a set of optimal solutions. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is demonstrated through eigenvalue analysis and nonlinear time-domain simulation studies. The results analysis reveals that the designed GA based STATCOM damping controller has an excellent capability in damping the power system low frequency oscillations and enhance greatly the dynamic stability of the power systems
