Abstract:

In this paper, analytical methods for loading of tunnel linings are compared with numerical methods. Analytical methods consist of two major groups: analytical methods in which the loading of lining depend on overburden height; analytical methods in which the loading of lining is independent of overburden height. In our research, parametric analysis indicates that the load of tunnel lining has a direct relation with the overburden height. Therefore, when using analytical methods, it is preferred to use those groups of analytical methods that depend on overburden height. Comparison between the analytical methods and FLAC software, indicate that analytical methods give good results in soft grounds. Higher elastic modulus of ground results in more difference between analytical and numerical methods. So, in a ground with high elasticity modulus, use of analytical methods result to overdesign. Also, parametric study shows that among different methods, Terzaghi’s method gives more realistic results for shallow tunnels and Balla’s method is more appropriate for deep tunnels. Also in cohesive soils Mandel’s method leads to better results.
