Abstract:

Increasing need to the construction of roads and tunnels due to the increase in population, and the necessity of tunnelling in variety of projects such as dam construction, underground mining and power stations call for the consideration of issues involved such as ground control in such hard conditions as swelling rocks. In this condition the effect of swelling factor causes the loading on the support system to apply during relatively long period of time. Due to this phenomenon in order to minimize the hazard of ground failure special attention should be paid to the design of support system. Considering the above and investigation of some case studies, resulted in some suggestions in this regard which can improve the performance of support system in such situations.
