An Energy and QoS-aware Routing Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks utilizing non-Revisiting non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm

Energy saving is one of the major concerns in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and much research have been done on energy optimization in essays to prolong network lifetime. Nowadays, there are WSN applications that need the Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee. Offering some QoS guarantee in sensor networks raises significant challenges. Not only the network needs to cope with battery constraint, but also should provide QoS guarantee, such as end-to-end delay and reliability. Designing protocols that optimize multiple objectives is computationally intractable. In this paper, first a new multi-objective genetic algorithm, named non-Revisiting non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (RSGA) is introduced. Then, an energy efficient QoS aware Routing protocol (QoSaR) is proposed based on RSGA to determine optimal routes that satisfies multiple parameters simultaneously. Simulation results in OPNET Modeler 14.0 demonstrate that QoSaR extends network lifetime while it outperforms network performance in comparison with SPEED and SAR routing protocols, by optimizing multiple QoS parameters.
