Abstract:

The lead-acid battery is the most effective energy storage system used for sustainable energies storing systems. Charging time, cycle life and capacity of battery are important factors, which should be studied seriously to have an efficient battery charging. A method of charging would be desired that battery reaches 100% State of Charge (SOC) in shortest time and improves battery life characteristic. In this paper, three methods of charging including constant current method, constant current-constant voltage method and multistage constant current-constant voltage method are investigated to determine the effective method of charging. Experiments are carried out on 12V valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery by utilization of the buck chopper. As the main scope of this paper is to examine lead-acid battery behavior under different charging methods, input voltage of system is assumed constant and maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is not considered.
