Abstract:

In order to study the spatial and temporal variations of the 500 HP westerlies in the Mediterranean region, the February monthly height values of 5 in thexdtgrees grid points area of 20-50 N and 0-65 E for the period 1961- 90 were obtained from the Meteorological Office of Japan. The monthly values of rainfall and temperature of synoptic stations in Iran were provided by the Meteorological Organization of Iran. The 500 HP height data were analysed through the principal component analysis and lag cross correlations. The results showed a long trough in the Mediterranean with random and slow displacement. The temporal and spatial variations of this trough showed positive relation with the temperature and negative relation with the precipitation of Iran especially to the west of Zagros.
