Abstract:

Soil erosion phenomenon is one of the most important factors which threaten soil and water resources directly or indirectly .Although it is a natural phencmtnon and it is nearly not possible to avoid it but controlling this phenomenon and allowing it not to develop is a great help in monitoring soil and water resources . In addition to the destruction of soil resources , as the main source of the food materials , settlement of the sediments in dam reservoirs has negative effects in erosion which leads to reduction of the effective volume of reservoirs as the main containers of the water which is the basic material of life . So paying serious attention to this matter , regarding rapid growth of world population , is very important. This study tries to give a solution to this problem economically and more rapidly. The catchment area of Abshineh river, with an area of 231.45 km2 and a maximum elevation of 3580 m and an average annual precipitation of 312.9 mm and annual sediment yield of 8.29 tons per hectare is studied in this research . In this study remote sensing and GIs methods and digital model of the area are used to prepare erosion map of the catchment area. Land-use and vegetation-cover maps are also prepared using TM LANDSAT digital images. Using data from RS and different data :SI layerstin GIS on the factors affecting erosion, the revised PSIAC model is calibrated in i F the area and as a result, critical zones from the point of the view of erosion are determined In this regard, sub-catchment no.2 having a sediment yield of 33.11 tons per hectare per year and sub-catchment no.1 having a sedien~ent yield of 16.65 tons per hectare per year are introduced as two areas with maximum and minimum erosion and sediment yield in the catchment area . Results from this study show that using RS and GIs methods in studying soil erosion in catchment areas is more rapid and has an acceptable accuracy in comparison with conventional methods in use. Further studies in this regard in different areas is advised.
