Abstract:

Background : Regarding the high prevalence of MSDs in mine workers relative to other industrial populations and the lack of information concerning MMH, this research was designed to identify these disorders and their risk factors by active surveillance process and evaluate MMH by 1991 revised NIOSH lifting equation in Kermanshah surface stone mines in 2001. Materials and Methods : This descriptive-analytic study was conducted on 36 surface miners present on the job. The data collecting tool was a health risk /symptom survey questionnaire completed through direct interview . Then the MMH tasks were assessed by observation and 1991 revised NIOSH lifting equation. The results were presented by descriptive statistics and analyzed by Pearson Correlation test . Findings : The study was achieved on 36 miners aged between 23-55(35.39? 8.98) with work history of 11.02 + 7.7( Range :1-30) years . All the workers have experienced musculoskeletal discomfort during the previous year. The causes of discomfort were said to be heavy manual lifting and work pressure. Injury severity rate was 5469 lost work days and limited work days during the previous year in 36 workers equivalent to 15 work forces. The average RWL in mine workers was 19.79 lb(6169Kg). There was significant positive correlation between age and degree of discomfort ( now and in the worst condition), the duration of discomfort incidence and the no. of discomfort episodes. Discussion : This research indicated that there is high prevalence rates of MSDs in miners which are mainly due to frequent loads handling . The quality of MMH was not ideal in workers under study. It is recommended to examine more precisely the work conditions in mines through further researches and present ergonomic educational to reduce discomfort and pains in'miners.
