Abstract:

This study was conducted to elucidate sickness absence measures due to all diseases and back pain and later to determine the risk factors affecting sick leave attributed to back pain. Data used in the first phase of the study was for sickness absence taken for 3> consecutive days during the 1999 to the TEZEREA c o m e with 1186 miner. Diagnosis of back pain was based on medical certificates prepared by physicians. The second phase of the study was the case-referent study. The case group (1148) were experienced at least one episode of medically certified sick-leave 3> consecutive days due to back pain during the 1999 and references (n=103) were chosen h m subjects who had no such leave. They were asked by questionnaire about sickness absence taken for 3> consecutive days due to back pain and about their exposure to various factors considered to be potential risk factors for LBP. Results: The frequency of absence due to all diseases and back pain was 32.8% and 6% respectively. Figures for absence prevalence due to all diseases and back pain was 24% and 5% respectively. The average length of absence due to all dlseases andback pain was 16.ldays and 9.9 days respectively. Rate of absence days due to LBP compared to that for all diseases was 0.1, percent of sickness absenteeism was 1.44%. Number of sickness absence days due to all diseases andback pain were 71 15 and 1032 days respectively .In the second phase of the study sigmficant associations were found between sick leave due to back pam and handling beyond forearm length, pvalue=0.0005 (OR=5.69), cold, p value=0.018 (OR= 2.54), contract work, pvalue = 0.025 (OR=2.21).
