Abstract:

Ground vibration in surrounding areas is an inevitable outcome of mine blasting. In order to prevent blasting fiom safety violation of the working environment and also to avoid any damage to people and structures around, blast induced ground vibration has to be under observation and control. In this paper the fundamentals of detection and estimation of land vibration, some of the relevant standards and few theoretical and empirical criteria have been reviewed. Utilising the data sets recorded by geophones in a national underground project, two empirical criteria have been analysed. The applicability of the two criteria for underground excavations has been assessed by means of the collected data. Analysis of the data by means of 2 capable sohares has shown that the values of parameters of the criteria are not constant but rather dependent on the specifications of the concerned sites. The applicability of one of the two empirical criteria with its, so called, constant parameters is assessed against the real data and compared with other approaches. Finally, a suitable equation with improved accuracy has been proposed for this specific project which can be considered as an applicable criterion for the case.
