Abstract:

As Tabas coal mine is planned to be extracted by mechanized longwall mining method using powered supports, safety in the application of this support system is considered in this paper. The number of reportable face accidents in UK coal mines reduced from 600 cases in1960 to less than 100 cases in 1980 and also the number of fatal face accidents from about 110 cases to zero. This is believed to be the direct result of the application of powered supports in these mines as the number of the cases using such support system increased from about 40 to about 700 during the above period. The author was involved in a research program in Newstan contery in Australia in 1995 where powered supports were successfully used as support system. Joy four-leg 350-ton chock shields were used in this mine and considerations such as retreat rate, panel width and periodic pressure on the system played role in selection of the type and the capacity of the support system. Regarding the high degree of safety in the application of such support system in this mine, using the experience of such mines is recommended in planning support system in Tabas coal mine.
