Abstract:

In order to provide safety at work places and also to prevent accidents it is necessary to define danger and to determine its quantity and quality. This task was performed at the Zarand coal washery for the period of 1378 and 138 1. This plant which is the largest coal washing plant in Iran employs on average 1000 personnel. The results of this study were also compared with that of the Sarcheshmeh copper mine and concentration plants of the United States. In this period, 41 accidents were occurred of which two were deathful. The average frequency of the accidents was 5.2 with a standard deviation of 2.3 which indicated a satisfactory safety level for the plant. Without consideration of the deathful accidents, the severity and severity-frequency indices were found to be 0.09 and 0.023, respectively. The highest numbers of accidents (48.8%) were occurred between 9 and 11 a.m. when the daily activities of workers are usually high. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with the average 17.1% of accidents had the higher share compared to the other days of the week. The highest rate of accidents with the average of 22% was occurred in the month of Mehar (September-October) when the workers had to work in their Pistachio f h n s as well. The age group above 45 years was subjected to more accidents (80.5%) than the other groups; a rather high average age is due to existence of an overall old population of the plant workers. The survey revealed that hands with 35.9% and body with 13.2% had the highest and lowest injuries, respectively. Head and neck, left hand, right hand and right foot in turn were subjected to more accidents. During the past four years, the main accidents causing factors were sliding or falling (19.5%), accident with vehicles (14.6%), equipment (12.2%) and falling of objects (12.2%).
